Immigration is a wild move. Most of us leave our countries dreaming of a life that we thought we could not have, had we chosen to stay in our country. It is not always an easy transition, particularly if you are aiming for a permanent move. A successful relocation relies tremendously on cultural and language integration.
Moreover, you must have a clear understanding of your options and what is available to you as an immigrant. Your choices will significantly shape your life, and the best decisions are the ones that are taken based on research and examined resources.
My immigration story
My story began as an international graduate student in 2017; when I moved to Canada in pursuit of my master’s degree in the Experimental Medicine program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) located in the heart of Vancouver. Receiving admission from UBC was a dream coming true. I still vividly remember how I used to browse the photos of the UBC campus on my outdated laptop and tell my mom, “Mom do you think one day I could study here?” And she would kindly reply “You never know what the future holds for you.” Five years later, here I was in Vancouver, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Even to this date, sometimes is hard to believe that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was bestowed on me.
I am originally from Iran. People from Iran are aware that despite being a tenacious student, not all the time you will have the opportunity to study in one of the best universities in the world. There are plenty of obstacles that one needs to overcome to get here. That is why I was determined to tackle even the most difficult challenges. Since then, my strive for excellence has been a lifelong journey. A journey that has been and continues to be a great source of powerful lessons for me.
